Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never been whitewater kayaking before. Will I be able to use a C6K course? – Yes.  You will be able to take lessons from our certified instructors and they will make sure you are ready to take on the course.

I have read where whitewater sports can be dangerous.  Are C6K courses safe? – Yes.  We have swift water rescue trained staff monitoring the activities on the course at all times, standing by to help anyone who gets into trouble.

I don’t own any of my own equipment, do I have to buy it before I can use the course? – No.  If you do have your own equipment, bring it along.  But if you don’t, we can rent it to you.

I'm a very experienced padder. Do I have to go through traing or orientation every time I want use the course? - No.  The first time you come to the course you will demonstrate your level of skill to our certified instructors.  We will enter you into our computer system, and you won’t need to do it again unless you are moving up to a higher level of difficulty.

I have done some paddling and would like to become more skilled. Can I do that at a C6K center? – Yes.  C6K centers offer training classes from beginner to expert.

I would like to go on an excursion on a natural whitewater river. Can C6K help? – Yes, in two ways.  First, we can make sure you are ready.  Our certified instructors can make sure you are proficient in the skills you may need to be ready.  Second, we can help you evaluate, select, and book your excursion with Outfitters across the country.

I and a group of my friends would like to go whitewater rafting. Can we do that at a C6K center? – Yes.  Tell us how many of you there are and we will reserve you a time to raft on our river.  We can accommodate groups of two to eight.  We will provide a certified guide, for an additional fee, or if someone in you group is experienced you may guide the raft yourselves.  We will also include all the personal gear needed.

What kinds of watercraft can be taken on the C6K course? – One and two person kayaks, one and two person whitewater canoes, one and two person inflatable kayaks and canoes, and four, six and eight person inflatable rafts.

Do I have to make a reservation? – Yes, in most cases.  We want to make sure we can accommodate you as we need to make sure the course does not become overcrowded and unsafe.  Also, we operate the river at different classes, 1 through 5, at different times of the day.  We need to make sure you are qualified to paddle in class of whitewater being generated at the time of day you want to paddle.
